The word ‘energeia’ is commonly translated as ‘being at work’. It’s the basis of the modern word ‘energy’.
Aristotle had his own philosophical interpretation, that of ‘a constant state of being at work’. More importantly, his focus was on the idea that ‘telos’ (the aim or result) – was the work – not separate from it
This might be the source of the common wisdom that ‘the journey is more important than the destination.'
The work is what matters. It is its own reward. Energeia is not potential; it’s a fully realised state in action.
That’s going to be important to remember because it is fundamental to how Energeia coaching works.
We don't promise 'results'. We can't. It's not honest or realistic. That's a sign you might be dealing with a scammer.
We will not ‘10X your business’ or your life. We won’t help you ‘blow up’ on social media and 'make a million in residual income in 12 months'. Your results are YOURS. The mileage you get from our advice and support may vary.
This is not a cop-out on our part. Our methods focus on what we can control, and we cannot control the 'results'. This is explained in more detail in the Core Courage programme.
What we DO promise are the tools, the ideas, the guidance, the truth and the encouragement that our preferred clients need.
So many people are lost and fearful for the future. They didn’t know who to listen to, who to trust or what to do. They are surrounded by noise from self-serving people and have never felt genuinely listened to. Everything feels like scam, and they're fed up with it.
They are the subjects of constant discouragement, told that they are not ‘enough’.
Not ‘smart’ enough.
Not ‘qualified’ enough.
Not ‘experienced’ enough.
Not young or old enough.
Not ‘connected’ enough.
Not ‘respected’ enough.
Over time, this stole their courage, their voices, their vision and, ultimately, their comfort about the future.
They were burdened with the weight of their previous career advice or mistakes. They felt nailed to the spot in their career, on what they realise is the deck of a burning, sinking ship.
When it came to who they were, they felt no choice but to 'mask' and 'fit in'. They were afraid of being themselves, despite all the encouragement to be 'authentic'. They'd seen what happened when they were.
When it came to their current jobs, they weren’t treated like viable contributors to the business mission. Their work felt empty and meaningless. They felt like impostors, just waiting to be exposed.
When it came to new jobs, they didn’t feel like viable applicants. Many were behind the curve on the latest ‘desirable’ certifications or skills, and they’d lost their taste for that particular song and dance.
Many wanted to work for themselves, but didn’t feel they were viable for that, either. They didn’t know what they needed to do, or how to do it. They did not know how to package and sell their wisdom on their own terms.
Not feeling that they were viable in the future was a source of constant concern.
The Energeia Viability model™ presents a clear process for how to develop future viability in all three areas - as a person, as an employee and as a business owner.
Before we get too carried away...
I could start blathering on all about how amazing I am and 'buy my stuff'...but that might not be right for either of us. Let's see what an ideal client for Energeia looks like.
My ideal client is over 30, fluent in English, and is likely to be located in the UK or EU. They work in the knowledge economy, rather than as skilled labour or the trades.
They are intelligent and intellectual, but not necessarily academic. They often feel like ‘the smartest person in the room’, and that has often been a problem for them because it is usually true. They often hear (or think to themselves) that they are ‘too smart for their own good.’ They will admit that they have spent a lot of time getting in their own way, mostly because nobody showed them how to get out of it.
This has led to a history of struggling to get along with people. They spent years trying to ‘fit in’, and it made them miserable and frustrated. They are highly likely to be neurodivergent in their thinking, or suspect that they might be. Perhaps they feel that they have spent so long ‘masking’ that they have lost sight of who they are. As a result, they prefer solitude to socialising.
They have a deep desire to contribute, but on their own terms. They’ve tried it the other way, and were taken advantage of. This has left them with trust issues and a lack of confidence in their own abilities because they didn’t see it coming. What is worse, if they were in a similar situation in future, they realise that it would likely happen again.
They aren’t the kind of person to get ‘offended’ and enjoy a dark, snarky sense of humour. They can handle directness and appreciate honesty over bullshit. They can handle my potty-mouth and total lack of class because they are able to sort the value of what I say from how I say it.
If they commit to something, they do it. They are comfortable with personal accountability.
Their current situation? They are horrified by the state of the world, and the widespread decline in intelligence, ethics, integrity and truth. As a result, they feel lost, frustrated and fearful for the future. They are tired of doing meaningless, disposable work for greedy, unethical people in faceless, bureaucratic organisations. They’re tired of being at the mercy of weak, inferior, incompetent managers. They’re tired of masking, tired of being manipulated and tired of being afraid to stand up for themselves. They crave meaning in their lives and work, but can’t work out how to find it.
If you nodded along as you read any of that, we might have more to talk about. You might be lost and outnumbered, but you are not helpless. Or…you don’t have to be.
The first step.
